Renewable resources have become the key regenerative energy source in Germany and many other countries. This so-called biomass is characterized by its great flexibility and broad range of applications.

Conversion to biogas is one possibility to utilize plants, residual materials of vegetable origin and agricultural waste such as liquid manure. Biogas is a mixture of gases produced when organic material of varying composition is fermented. The main component is methane, which can be used for energetic applications, and so, the various processes to produce biogas are also called methanation.

Biogas can be used directly where it is produced, for instance, in municipal heating/power stations for the generation of electrical energy as well as heat. It can be processed and fed into a natural gas network or be used as fuel for motors. Biogas can be stored and used for peak loads. It has a very high degree of efficiency, compared to other renewable energy resources, due to the integrated utilization of the input materials.

Other benefits include the following:

  • Production and usage are CO2-neutral;
  • Production of this energy source is completely silent;
  • Biogenic waste and agricultural residues can be recycled;
  • Residues from water treatment (sludge) can also be recycled;
  • Digestates are high-quality fertilizers with a much lower degree of odor emissions than, for instance, liquid manure.

For these reasons, biogas systems make sense for farms where energy power plants are utilized. In municipalities, industrial and commercial facilities biogas systems can be used to dispose of and recycle organic waste and residues. Biogas systems reduce dependencies on fossil resources, strengthen regional structures and reduce waste loads by up to 80%.
